Cheap experiments don't get explored. They get cut.

AI made running a hundred small tests almost free. Yet in most companies exploration still dies the moment the quarter tightens: the tool got cheaper but behavior did not change.

James March explained why decades ago: firms drift toward ๐ž๐ฑ๐ฉ๐ฅ๐จ๐ข๐ญ๐ข๐ง๐  what they already know and slowly starve the ๐ž๐ฑ๐ฉ๐ฅ๐จ๐ซ๐ข๐ง๐  that renews them, because the known pays back sooner and more surely. AI does not fix that drift, and pointed at what you already do, it simply digs the existing groove deeper and faster.

So the real constraint is not the cost of a single test. It is that nobody protects the test from the budget.

Two things fix that. A greenhouse and a gate.

๐“๐ก๐ž ๐ ๐ซ๐ž๐ž๐ง๐ก๐จ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ž ๐ข๐ฌ ๐ฉ๐ซ๐จ๐ญ๐ž๐œ๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง: a ring-fenced budget and a sponsor senior enough to refuse the Q3 cut, judged on what the work learns rather than what it earns this quarter. I have sat in the room where exploration is the first line crossed out when money gets tight, and it always is, unless someone deliberately shelters it.

๐“๐ก๐ž ๐ ๐š๐ญ๐ž ๐ข๐ฌ ๐๐ข๐ฌ๐œ๐ข๐ฉ๐ฅ๐ข๐ง๐ž: every bet carries a hypothesis, a kill-metric, and a date, all agreed up front. Protection without discipline isn't a strategy. It's a zombie farm.

๐Ž๐ง๐ž ๐œ๐š๐ญ๐œ๐ก ๐ฐ๐จ๐ซ๐ญ๐ก ๐ง๐š๐ฆ๐ข๐ง๐ : ๐˜ˆ๐˜ ๐˜ค๐˜ข๐˜ฏ ๐˜ธ๐˜ช๐˜ฅ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ด๐˜ฆ๐˜ข๐˜ณ๐˜ค๐˜ฉ, ๐˜ฃ๐˜ถ๐˜ต ๐˜ช๐˜ต ๐˜ค๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฐ๐˜ต ๐˜ค๐˜ฉ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฐ๐˜ด๐˜ฆ, because trained on the past, it keeps pulling toward the average. So let it generate the hundred options, then keep a human to pick the one that looks off, the outlier, the leap of mind, the bet no model would ever make.

The firms that get displaced won't lack AI. They will have optimized their way into irrelevance, sitting on a thousand cheap experiments they were never allowed to run.

So look at your roadmap, then at your budget lines, and ask whether exploration is actually funded or merely admired in principle.

And the real test: who has the rank to protect the seedlings when the quarter turns?
