HUMAN RESERVED

Bill Gates asked where AI should stop.

Which parts of being human should stay human, even once AI does them better?

Bill Gates used a phrase this week that I havenโ€™t been able to leave alone: Human Reserved.

I got my answer wrong three times.

My first list named places. Courts. Nurseries. Battlefields.

Places turn out to be the wrong unit. What matters isnโ€™t where AI goes. Itโ€™s what changes when it arrives.

Sort by that instead, and four groups appear.

Lethal force. Power grids. Anything where the mistake outlives the correction. Here the case for a hard line is easiest to make.

A verdict. A vote. An apology. Better judgment does not transfer authority. An AI could reason its way to a fairer sentence and still not be able to pass it, because the point was never only the reasoning.

Infancy. Schooling. Grief. The damage here may arrive a generation after the decision. No market corrects a harm that surfaces in 2050. The Romanian orphanage studies offer one sobering clue: children moved into family care recovered a great deal, but not all of it, and earlier placement mattered. Some windows close.

Legal advice. Company for the old. A teacher with time. Keeping the AI out is not neutrality. It preserves the status quo, and sometimes the status quo is nobody coming.

That fourth group is where I keep changing my mind.

An AI companion for a parent who has no one is a gift. The same device, in a family that could visit, quietly reprices the visit.

Same object. Opposite effect. Nothing on the box tells you which one you bought.

So the line does not run between the four groups. It runs inside each of them, and it moves.

Which left me with questions rather than rules. Five of them.

1-Does the human still do the thing, or only approve it?
2-Is the effort removed from the part that carried the meaning, or the part that did not?
3-Are we shown the evidence, or the conclusion?
4-Does anyone measure how often the human disagrees?
5-Can the person affected have it redone from scratch, rather than reviewed?

The fourth is the one that doesnโ€™t lie.

If the humans never disagree, the humans are decoration, whatever the policy says.

None of this is pressing this year. That is precisely why it is worth thinking about now.

We write rules badly in a hurry. And erosion is, by definition, noticed late.

Name one thing youโ€™d keep Human Reserved even if AI became demonstrably better at it.

And spell out what exactly youโ€™re protecting.
