Principles Won't Save You When AI Decides Your Life

Everyone talks about "AI principles." Fairness. Transparency. Safety. Accountabilityโ€ฆ

And they matter.

Yet principles are no match when AI can make a decision about your job, your loan, your insurance, your school, or your benefits and you have no real way to fight it.

A Right That Cannot Be Exercised Is Not A Right.

An override that never works is not an override.

Forget vague principles. We need enforceable constraints.

Start with "AI DUE PROCESS" for high-stakes decisions:

ยท Right to contest

ยท Fast, real response

ยท Named human decision owner

ยท Plain-language explanation

ยท Genuine appeal with real chance of reversal

ยท Opt-out in critical domains

If regulators and courts lack real technical teeth, they become hostages to the very systems they're supposed to oversee. Oversight turns into theater.

So any society serious about PRESERVING HUMAN AGENCY needs:

ยท Independent auditors with real power

ยท Separation of roles (builders โ‰  operators โ‰  auditors)

ยท No single vendor controlling critical state functions

ยท Mandatory audit logs for high-stakes decisions

ยท Manual fallback that actually works when the system fails

Without these, "human override" is pure myth:

Technically Allowed, Practically Impossible.

ONE QUESTION decides everything:

Can an ordinary citizen challenge the system - and sometimes win?

Track two numbers:

โ†’ % of successful appeals

โ†’ Time to resolution

If successful appeals trend to zero, agency is gone.

Not because AI seized power.

Because we built systems where AUTHORITY could NO LONGER be QUESTIONED.
