Some expertise is memory.
The best expertise is mechanism.

Experts know what worked.
They know what failed.
They know the constraints, trade-offs, patterns, and scars of prior battles.

That knowledge is ๐ฏ๐š๐ฅ๐ฎ๐š๐›๐ฅ๐ž.

But it can also become a ๐ญ๐ซ๐š๐ฉ.

The danger is not expertise itself. The danger is when expertise hardens into prediction. When โ€œIโ€™ve seen this beforeโ€ becomes โ€œthis cannot be different.โ€ When judgment becomes nostalgia.

AI changes the equation, but not in the simplistic way many assume.

AI is not magically better at the future. Most AI is trained on the past too. It can synthesize more, scan wider, generate alternatives faster, and challenge assumptions at scale.

But it can also reproduce consensus, polish weak thinking, and make inherited patterns sound inevitable.

So no, AI does not make expertise obsolete.

It makes ๐ฅ๐š๐ณ๐ฒ ๐ž๐ฑ๐ฉ๐ž๐ซ๐ญ๐ข๐ฌ๐ž less defensible.

The expert of the future is not the person who says:

โ€œTrust me, I know.โ€

The expert of the future says:

โ€œHere is the mechanism.โ€
โ€œHere is where it applies.โ€
โ€œHere is where it breaks.โ€
โ€œHere is the test that would prove me wrong.โ€

๐“๐ก๐š๐ญ ๐ข๐ฌ ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐ฌ๐ก๐ข๐Ÿ๐ญ.

AI is powerful for expanding the possibility space.
Expertise is powerful for compressing it.
Experiments are what keep both honest.

In product work, this means the expert should not only say, โ€œUsers wonโ€™t adopt this.โ€

They should say:

โ€œAdoption depends on switching cost, trust, and timing. Here is the smallest test that would tell us which one breaks first.โ€

The future will not be built by experts alone.
It will not be built by AI alone.

It will be built by people who can combine three things:

Breadth from AI.
Causal judgment from expertise.
Discipline from testing.

The real question is not whether experts still matter.

The question is whether their expertise is made of memories โ€” or mechanisms.

And in a world moving this fast, the best thinkers will not be the ones most certain about the future.

They will be the ones most capable of learning their way into it.
