AI will create new wealth. The question is whether it will trigger a transition people can survive.

The debate keeps getting stuck in a false binary. One side: โ€œAI will destroy jobs.โ€ The other: โ€œtechnology always creates new ones.โ€ Both can be true, and both miss the point.

The real question is whether people whose jobs are disrupted can move into the new economy fast enough, locally enough, and at wages that preserve their dignity.

The workers most at risk are not the least educated. They are people whose jobs involve structured information processing: preparing reports, coordinating workflows, reconciling data, applying known rules. Early-career workers. Mid-career specialists tied to specific tools or employers. Administrative workers in regions with few alternatives.

It works only when there is a real destination: an employer ready to hire, a role that pays enough, a credential that matters. And training people for jobs that are about to be automated is not a strategy. It is simply irresponsible.

๐‚๐จ๐ฆ๐ฉ๐š๐ง๐ข๐ž๐ฌ ๐œ๐š๐ง ๐ก๐ž๐ฅ๐ฉ make the transition more manageable by:

- including a worker transition plan in every automation plan. If the business case includes productivity gains, it should include who is affected and what redeployment options exist.

- redesigning jobs before eliminating people. AI should remove low-value work and move people toward judgment, relationships, trust, and exception handling, not toward the exit.

- protecting the talent pipeline. If AI absorbs entry-level work, build the apprenticeships and rotational programs that replace what junior roles used to teach.

- measuring redeployment, not just productivity. A firm that automates hundreds of roles and leaves society to absorb the damage has not innovated responsibly. It has ๐ž๐ฑ๐ญ๐ž๐ซ๐ง๐š๐ฅ๐ข๐ณ๐ž๐ ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐œ๐จ๐ฌ๐ญ.

The future of work and society will not be determined only by what AI can do. It will also be determined by whether we treat transition as a shared responsibility or leave individuals to absorb the shock on their own.

Will companies own up to their responsibility in the transition ? What should governments do to facilitate that transition? Iโ€™ll explore that in tomorrowโ€™s post.
